When I was young, death seemed so rare An accident, sickness, too busy to care Quick condolences, no time to despair Skip funerals, forget cards, a fool unaware What’s one light in a sky full of stars? When one flickers, another flares from afar What’s one moment in a world filled with hours? Just reset the clock like a blind coward Who cares when one life ends? You’re fine, you’re fine, let’s all pretend The world keeps moving, it passes us by Tragedy strikes, we don’t know why Older now, smell the stink of death’s mess His stench wafts through children, parents Reminds us we’re only passing tenants Stand up, don’t stop, can’t ask why Sit down sit down, let yourself cry The tears that fall are bitter and warm Filled with memory, finality that’s torn Of words unsaid, new grief reborn A chair unseated, a future forlorn What’s one light in a sky full of stars? When one flickers the last spark burns scars What’s one moment in a world filled with hours? When one clock stops, the loss is ours Who cares when one life ends? You do. If you suffer this loss, our hearts also break A wound this deep takes what it takes -- For my friends whose parents, siblings, or children have passed away or face serious illness and injury. Sometimes nothing, not words, not gifts, not donations, not memories, can ease the pain. Nothing but time.
